Welcome to Melbourne!

Welcome to Melbourne! Tonight we’re not letting you sit in your room scrolling through your phone. Meet your guide and your new travel family over a welcome dinner on the banks of the Yarra River, then raise a glass with riverside drinks as the city lights up around you. This is how your Australian adventure begins.

Landing a few days before? No worries! Your airport pickup is included and can be arranged for any time on any day before the tour.

Need extra nights accommodation? You can book these at checkout.

Discover the Cultural Capital

Today we show you why Melbourne is unlike anywhere else in Australia. Your morning takes you through the CBD and into Hosier Lane – a hidden laneway filled with floor to ceiling street art. Everywhere you look, you’ll spot something new and with new pieces appearing overnight, you could be the first to view the latest artwork!

From there your guide will take you on an Aboriginal Heritage Walk to learn about the Wurundjeri people and the deep history of Naarm – Melbourne’s traditional name – long before the city skyline existed. It’s one of those experiences that genuinely changes the way you see the place you’re standing in.

The afternoon is yours to spend at ACMI (Australia’s Centre for the Moving Image), or the NGV, the largest art gallery in the Southern Hemisphere. Then the day closes out in Chinatown. One of the oldest in the world, lantern-lit streets and some of the best food you’ll eat in Australia.

Your Day, Your Way

Today is your opportunity to get out of the city and tick off an iconic slice of Victoria right on Melbourne’s doorstep. You and your group can add on a guided day trip to the Great Ocean Road – the most famous road trip in the world! Dramatic coastal cliffs, ancient rainforest and the legendary Twelve Apostles rising out of the Southern Ocean. Add it on at checkout when booking this tour.

Not doing a day trip? Melbourne is still yours to explore. Your guide will set you up with a list of recommendations for places outside your itinerary to discover on your own terms, with or without your group.

And if you’re on a Working Holiday Visa, everything you need is in your FREE optional Welcome Pack

If you want to go deeper on anything, a 1-on-1 with a member of our team is available whenever suits you – today, tomorrow or any time during your stay in Melbourne.

Brighton Beach to St Kilda

Think Melbourne is just a metropolitan city? Think again! In fact Melbourne’s coast line is stunning and has a completely different atmosphere to the CBD. We start at Brighton Beach, most known for its iconic and individually designed bathing boxes, from there we’ll walk along the coastline to St Kilda with a halfway stop at Point Ormond for the best city skyline view in Melbourne.

Once we reach St Kilda, you’ll have some free time to explore the sunny seaside suburb before finishing the day with drinks as the sun drops over the ocean.

Queen Victoria Market & the City

This morning kicks things off at Queen Victoria Market – one of the largest open air markets in the Southern Hemisphere. Here you’ll find fresh produce, incredible coffee and souvenir stalls aka one of the best places to purchase the classic ‘Australia’ t-shirt!

In the afternoon we’ll head up the Skytower for a panoramic view across the whole city, then the afternoon is yours – State Library, museums or just soaking up the city before dinner in the CBD.

Keep the Adventure Going

Your Welcome to Melbourne tour might be over, but your Australian adventure is just getting started. Here’s how to keep it going:

Welcome to Sydney | 5 Days

Melbourne and Sydney are two completely different cities and honestly, you need both. Jump on a flight or overnight bus up to Sydney and experience Australia’s harbour city – coastal walks, ferry hopping, rooftop drinks and a city that wears its beauty effortlessly. Two iconic cities, two completely different adventures, one trip you’ll never forget.

Welcome to Australia: Melbourne to Cairns | 44 Days

Only the best way to explore Melbourne! You’ll explore Australia’s cultural capital, tick off all the must-see spots and discover hidden gems over 5 days. This is a fully-guided tour so you’ll be with a group of like-minded backpackers aka your new travel friends. Five days not enough? Upgrade to a travel package and keep the adventure going up the East Coast.

Our tours are for 18-39 year olds wanting to travel and see more of Australia. Whether you’re on a Working Holiday Visa, travelling as a tourist or just looking for the best possible introduction to Melbourne, this is the perfect way to start your adventure. About 80% of our travellers are solo, so this is the perfect tour for those who want to meet new people, make friends and explore a new place at the same time.

Our tours are built for solo travellers. In fact, around 80% of people on tour are travelling alone, so you’ll fit right in. So many of our travellers make friends for life on our Welcome tours!

Absolutely! Everyone who joins us on tour is just like you, keen to make friends and make memories. We see week after week friendships are made that last way beyond our tours. We’ve even had a wedding come from a couple meeting on a Welcome Tour!

Yep, about 80% of people on tour are actually solo travellers. We also have a few couples or friends join us, but the majority on tour will always be solo.

Our tours cater for people aged 18-36 years old. The average age varies each week and that’s what we love about it. If we had to be more specific, most people tend to be in their twenties or early thirties. But what we love the most is that age really is just a number when you’re travelling as you’re all experiencing new things at the same time.

You sure can! We create a WhatsApp group chat the week leading up to the tour so you can get to know each other before you even land. You can also join our Australia Travels Facebook group to connect with people on your tour, ask questions and get expert advice before your tour starts.

Yes. We keep the whole group together in the same dorms wherever possible, so you’ll be sharing with your new travel family from night one. If you’d prefer your own space, private room upgrades are also available.

We keep the whole group together in the same dorms so you and your partner will be together. If you’d like your own private room, upgrades are available at checkout for couples and solo travellers who want their own space.

You’ll spend five nights at Little Drifter, North Melbourne – a social, well-located hostel on the edge of the city’s vibrant centre. Everything you need to hit the ground running from Day One, with our office close by too.

Dorms are super social and that’s why we love them! Introduce yourself to your dorm mates and be polite and friendly throughout your stay and you’ll get the same in return. All dorms have lockers to keep your valuables safe, so remember to bring a small padlock with you. We aim to get everyone on Welcome to Melbourne in the same dorm, but if you have any special requests such as an all-female dorm or a private room upgrade, just let us know.

Nerves are totally normal and, we’re telling you now, everyone in your group feels exactly the same way. By the end of the tour you’ll wonder how you only met a week ago and that’s what we love about group tours, friendships are formed faster than at home, and memories are made to last a lifetime. Still feeling a little nervous when you arrive? Chat to your guide or the team, and we’ll help you feel at ease (we’ve also all been in your shoes so know exactly how you feel). If you want to start connecting before you even arrive, join our Australia Travels Facebook group where future travellers ask questions, share plans and get advice from people who’ve done it before.

Absolutely! The tour is focused on all things Melbourne, the laneways, the coffee culture, the beaches and being with a group of new friends. The Working Holiday Visa support is completely optional and there for those who need it. So if you’re coming on a tourist, student or Working Holiday Visa, we’d love to show you around.

Five days exploring the very best of Melbourne. We’ll be visiting the laneways, learning about Aboriginal culture, taking in the beaches and the best view of all – from the Skytower. All your accommodation is included at our favourite hostel, Little Drifter in North Melbourne, and if you’re coming on a Working Holiday Visa you can add on our free Welcome Pack to get all your admin sorted.

A 2-hour coastal walk taking in Melbourne’s most photographed stretch of coastline. You’ll start at Brighton’s iconic bathing boxes and finish at St Kilda, with an included lunch and free time along the way to explore Luna Park, the beach and local shopping.

Not at all. It’s a relaxed 2-hour coastal walk with plenty of stops along the way for lunch, free time and sightseeing. There’s no specific fitness level required.

Melbourne’s most famous laneway and the heart of the city’s street art scene. Expect walls covered in never-ending street art and a unique buzz around the place. We love that no two trips are the same as the street-art scene moves so quickly, so snap your faves as you might not see them again.

A guided walk learning about the Wurundjeri people and the deep history of Naarm – Melbourne’s traditional, aboriginal name long before the city skyline existed. A genuinely meaningful way to understand the place you’re exploring.

The best spot for sunset! Picture the open ocean in front of you and the Melbourne skyline in the distance, there’s no better spot to finish the day.

Day Three is yours to explore your way, but we have heaps of options and support. You can add on a guided Great Ocean Road day trip with your group or, if you’d rather spend the day exploring the city, your guide will set you up with recommendations for places outside your itinerary to explore on your own terms. And if you’re on a WHV, your free Welcome Pack has everything you need to get sorted at your own pace, but you can also use this day to chat with our Welcome to Travel team about anything you need guidance on.

One of the most famous day trips from Melbourne. You’ll spend the full day exploring this scenic coastline on a guided tour. You’ll visit dramatic cliffs, ancient rainforest and the legendary Twelve Apostles rising out of the Southern Ocean. Add it on at checkout when booking your tour.

Yes! The tour runs year-round with a flexible itinerary that moves with Melbourne’s famously unpredictable weather. Whatever the season, you’ll still be getting outdoors and making the most of the city.

That’s up to you and we’re here to help with that! You can flow straight into our 44-day Melbourne to Cairns adventure and take on the entire East Coast, head up to Sydney to tick off Australia’s most iconic city, or plan your dream trip from scratch with a Welcome to Travel team member. Either way we are here to support you before, during and after your tour.

Seamlessly. Our 44-day Melbourne to Cairns package combines Welcome to Melbourne with Welcome to Sydney and the 30-day East Coast tour in one booking. Same group, same energy – just a whole lot more of Australia.

The 37-day Sydney to Cairns package starts in Sydney and combines it with the 30-day East Coast tour. The 44-day Melbourne to Cairns package starts with you in Melbourne, then adds Welcome to Sydney before flowing into the full East Coast – so you get both iconic cities all in one booking.

Of course! You can choose to plan your travels during a 1-to-1 meeting with our Community Team on the Wednesday of your tour. Or we can help you plan an adventure before you’ve even left home or any time after the tour. Just get in touch and we’ll make it happen.

Absolutely. Our tours are built around seeing the very best of Australia with a group of new mates. The Working Holiday Visa support is completely optional and there for those who need it. If you’re visiting Sydney as a tourist, student or just passing by, you’ll be very welcome.

It’s completely optional. If you want the Welcome Pack it’s there, if you don’t, it won’t get in the way of your tour.

You’ll also get exclusive access to our live job board which works with employers who are actively hiring WHV holders. We also send out regular jobs email with the latest opportunities.

A personal identity number created by the Australian Taxation Office. You’ll need it for every job you have in Australia so that you’re correctly taxed on your income. Your Welcome Pack walks you through exactly how to apply.

If you’re working in Australia, yes – employers will only pay into an Australian account. Your Welcome Pack will guide you through the setup process. You can also fast-track it by creating a Wise account before you arrive so you already have Australian dollars as soon as you land.

Medicare is Australia’s healthcare scheme. Only certain countries are eligible – currently it’s Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Check the Services Australia website for eligibility and enrolment details and we’ll point you in the right direction.

SIM card information is included in your Welcome Pack, so you’ll be able to set yourself up from Day One. If you’d prefer to get set up as soon as you land, we recommend organising an eSIM before you leave home so you’re connected from the moment you arrive.

Secure your spot with a $99 deposit. Full payment is only required 42 days before departure giving you plenty of time to save. If you book within 56 days of departure, full payment is required at the time of booking.

As soon as you know you’re coming. We offer free date changes up until 43 days before your tour (depending on availability) so there’s no risk in booking early. Our tours regularly fill up three months in advance, so if you have your eye on a date, take the leap, we’d hate for you to miss out.

Yes, we offer unlimited free date changes up to 43 days before departure, subject to availability. Please see our booking terms and conditions for full details.

Definitely, extra nights at the same hostel are available before the tour. Add them as an optional extra at checkout or we’ll email you four weeks before your departure to arrange it.

Absolutely, you can add extra nights at the same hostel for after your tour at check out, or you’ll also have the option to arrange these while on tour.

With accommodation, activities and several meals included, we’d suggest around $300AUD for the week covers extras comfortably. Lunch runs $10-18, dinner $13-25 and drinks $12-16 outside of included meals.

We strongly recommend everyone organising travel insurance before they leave their flight to Australia. Check out our travel insurance recommendations for the best option for you.

Most travel insurance options include emergency medical cover. We recommend looking at both travel and medical insurance options if you’re not covered by Medicare.

Pack as light as you can and your future self will thank you! Believe us, we’ve learned the hard way with a 23kg backpack. Every hostel has laundry so you’ll always be able to do a wash. Our advice is to pack for 10-14 days and wash and repeat. But we know you’ll have even more questions, so check out our ultimate packing guide for a comprehensive packing list.

This is our most-asked question and to be honest, we don’t have the answer. It’s essentially up to you and what you already have. A soft-shell bag is easiest as it fits under beds and on buses more easily. Choosing a backpack will be essential if you’re planning on travelling in Asia before or after your time Down Under. But a suitcase is becoming more and more popular for travelling the East Coast. Our biggest tip is to make sure you also bring a good sized day bag for days out and short overnight visits.

Yes. If you’re visiting as a tourist you’ll need a Visitor Visa. If you’re coming to work while on holiday you’ll need a Working Holiday Visa (417) or Work and Holiday Visa (462) depending on your country. Check the Australian Government website for the full list and application process.

Head over to the Australian Government website and search for your visa. Most visas are approved instantly but it’s advised to apply up to 3 months before you want to travel to Australia. Always check the official government site for specific enquiries.

If you’re coming on a Working Holiday visa, the Australian Government requires you to have $5,000 AUD in your bank account on arrival. This is a good savings target if you want to travel for a few weeks or set yourself up for working life in Australia. If you want an epic time exploring the East Coast, we’d recommend saving over $5,000. The more you save, the more bucket-list activities you can tick off.

Absolutely! You’ll get the best introduction to the city and leave with a new group of mates, your time in Australia sorted plus a week of memories you’ll never forget. This tour is perfect for solo travellers to see the best of Melbourne and have all the on-going support for your time in Australia.

A fully-guided 5 day tour of Melbourne. You’ll get picked up from the airport, have 5 nights of accommodation in our favourite hostel and get to do loads of activities. The tour also includes 1 lunch and 3 dinners. Plus for those on a Working Holiday Visa, our Welcome Pack includes all the support and admin set up to continue your time in Australia.

Plus our Welcome to Melbourne tour includes added value you can’t find anywhere else with our Welcome Pack to get your Working Holiday admin sorted and support throughout your time in Australia.

Nope, we have no hidden costs, everything you see is included! There is the option to add-on a day trip to the Great Ocean Road at an additional cost. For food and drink not included, we recommend around $150-200 spending money for your time in Melbourne.

Absolutely! The price covers all your accommodation in the city centre, airport pick up, and a fully-guided week! We’ll take you to the must-see parts of Melbourne and also the hidden gems too all with a group of new friends. You’ll be able to connect before you arrive with a dedicated group chat and have heaps of support throughout your time in Australia. Plus, if you’re coming on a Working Holiday Visa our free Welcome Pack add-on ensures all your admin and job support is included.

Most tours show you the highlights and drop you back at your hotel. Welcome to Melbourne is built around the people as much as the places. You arrive as a stranger and leave with a group of friends, a guide who knows the city better than anyone and a plan for the rest of your Australian adventure.

Yep! Once you’ve paid your deposit to secure your spot, please email our reservations team to set up your payment plan. Please note payment plans need to be completed and final balances paid 42 days before your tour starts.
